Differences Between PP and PE and Their Application Areas

Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) are the two most common raw materials in plastics production. Knowing their mechanical, thermal and chemical differences directly affects your production quality.

Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) are the two most widely used members of the polyolefin family. Although both are lightweight, economical and easy to process, differences in their molecular structure create clear performance distinctions in the final product. Choosing the right raw material directly impacts both product lifespan and production cost.

Mechanical and Thermal Differences

PP has a higher melting point (around 160-170°C) and higher tensile strength than PE. This makes it ideal for hot-fill packaging and applications requiring sterilization. PE, on the other hand, retains its flexibility even at low temperatures, making it stand out in products where impact resistance is critical.

Density and Chemical Resistance

PE is offered in different density grades such as LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE. While HDPE provides high rigidity and chemical resistance, LDPE is preferred for film and flexible packaging. PP shows superior resistance to oils and solvents, and is therefore common in automotive and food-contact applications.

Typical Application Areas

  • PP: Automotive bumpers, food containers, textile fibers, living-hinge caps and hot-fill bottles.
  • PE: Packaging films, bags, pipe systems, cable insulation and blow-molded products.
